The herd is large, around 160 horses, but they all live in small bands of around 5 or 6. There are also bachelor stallions which may group together or just hang out in the general vicinity of other bands. The bachelors are hoping for an opportunity and they often test the band stallion. Keeping a band together requires the band stallion to assert authority every so often as Duke is doing here. The young bachelor Missoula casually looks on.
